Great news, we’re finally out of Austria (for now 😄). In today’s virtual #walkwithfuus vacation, I’m taking you to Kyoto, Japan and their beautiful traditional homes known as kyo-machiya. Many of these long, narrow wooden townhomes have survived wars, earthquakes and more, and typically feature traditional fixtures like sliding doors, tatami mats, and enclosed courtyard gardens in the back. Some of Kyoto’s kyo-machiya have been turned into retail spaces (I went to one that had been turned into a two-story Starbucks 😅) but there are quite a few that still serve as homes. You can even rent them for vacation (whenever that gets to happen again). Walking the streets of Kyoto is like stepping back in time, these homes are truly beautiful, and hopefully, next time I’m there I’ll try to stay in one 🤞🏽

Hey, there. I don’t have my usual virtual #walkwithfuus vacation post to share today. I do, though, want to share my belief in the power of photography and the ability for an image to challenge our comprehension. So today, I want to leave you to ponder this very simple image. What do you see? Perhaps the power of knowledge to illuminate the path from the deepest, darkest depths of our minds and hearts? Or maybe you see some ancient books and a sunny doorway? There’s no wrong or right answer here but sometimes the mere act of contemplation is a step in the right direction. ☮️

Another day, another beautiful cafe. In today’s #walkwithfuus, I’m taking you to Gerstner K. u. K. Hofzuckerbäckerei, the Imperial and Royal Court Confectioner in the heart of Vienna. But this fancy cafe didn’t always have royal roots. The pastry shop was opened in 1847 by Anton and Barbara Gerstner. It soon caught the eye (and tastes) of the Imperial Court, who commissioned the shop to supply desserts for the royal family. And now, almost 200 years later, it’s still known for its delectable sweet treats and impeccable views (it’s right next door to the Vienna Opera House). This majestic staircase starts off on the ground floor pastry shop, taking you upstairs to two more floors, one with a cafe and another with a bar/lounge. If you pay a visit, make sure you grab a seat at the table with velvet upholstered loveseats right next to the large windows overlooking the Opera House. If you’re lucky, you can enjoy a coffee and strudel with views of a live outdoor opera performance. It doesn’t get more Viennese than that, my friends ☕️🍰🎶
